Located on or near the campuses of Southern Arizona community colleges, The University of Arizona South offers transfer students the final 60 credits of a bachelor’s degree in 16 different disciplines. Transition to Teaching
UA South is pleased to announce a new program:
Transition to Teaching, a federally-funded teacher education program designed to prepare new math, science and technology (STEM) teachers for border schools in Cochise and Santa Cruz counties.
- What: M.Ed program that prepares new STEM teachers for border schools
- When: First cohort starts June, 2012
- Benefits: Participants receive stipends and specialized training for teaching STEM subjects in border schools.
Your commitment:
- Complete the M.Ed in Secondary Education course work
- Teach in a high-need border school for three years after completing the program

- Specialized course work focusing on teaching STEM subjects on the border
- Summer institutes for participants
- Ongoing professional development during the year
Program Highlights:
Students will be recruited from four target groups: returning military personnel, paraprofessionals, recent Hispanic graduates, and graduates who come from the two-county program area; each representing either mid-career professionals or recent graduates. Students will be selected based on backgrounds and ability in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subject areas.
In addition to core teacher preparation courses, specialized courses and workshops such as "From the Military to the Classroom: Making a Successful Transition and "Teaching on the Border in Rural Arizona" will be presented.
Upon graduation, students will be given placement opportunities with partner schools and receive ongoing professional development opportunities, teacher mentorships, and peer support programs.
